Temporomandibular Joint Disorder Treatments

Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorder affects the mandibular area and the parts surrounding it. This condition often causes pain and structural difficulties on the bones and muscles of the face, mouth, and neck. TMJ symptoms include bad bites, headaches, chewing problems, and speech problems. Some of the causes of TMJ are stress, bruxism, nail biting habits, osteoarthritis, and trauma. It can be treated through self-care or medication, depending on the severity of the case.
For mild cases of TMJ dysfunction, the patient may try resting a warm or cold compress on the jaw. Limiting jaw movement will also help because unnecessary strain to the joint will only aggravate the condition. Eating soft food eases the discomfort since the jaw has to exert less effort when chewing. For the same reason, food should also be cut into small pieces.
