The roof is built to protect the building and its inhabitants from the forces of nature, particularly precipitation and the strong sunlight. Between the top layer and the ceiling, strong beams and moisture-proof materials make the roof sturdy and resistant to strong winds, heavy rains, or snow. Some top layers are specifically designed to adapt to the environment.

ll roofs are made with gutters that collect and channel water from the roof’s base. The gutter is usually made with variety of metals, including cast iron, lead, and galvanized steel. It may also be made of copper, zinc, aluminum, and plastic. There are some gutters made of concrete, stone, and wood, but these are less common.
