Reports of nationwide mortgage fraud is down by 41 percent in 2010, California became the third U.S. city with most cases fraud cases according to industry tracker.
Earlier California was ranked 10th in the 2009 report prepared LexisNexis Mortgage Asset Research Institute.
It is based on confirmed cases of fraud reported to the Institute by lenders and others in the mortgage industry. The figures are converted into a classification index.
Florida has been ranked for the first time since 2006.
But California is catching up. This is because Los Angeles area accounted for 17 percent of mortgage originations last year, maximum in the country.
State's score also likely to jump as a short sale accounted for a big chunk of the sales, and fraud cases are growing in these areas of the market, the company said.
Fraud cases has also declined because the perpetrators are now more skilled, the company said.
