The discovery of precious minerals and the subsequent growth of the Mining industry in Australia have greatly shaped the destiny of the country and its people. It has contributed significantly in the steady progress of the country since the early colonies in Australia. “Modern” mining began with the discovery of coal by convicts in 1791, giving rise to the coal industry in Australia. Silver and copper were discovered in the 1840’s. However, Lead was the first mineral to be mined in Australia from Glen Osmond hills in Adelaide. This was followed by the mining of Copper at Kapunda, Burra, and the Copper Triangle of South Australia. In 1851, the discovery of Gold in New South Wales and Victoria ushered in the Gold Rush in Australia. This has left a lasting impact on Victoria and Australia as a whole.
