Sometimes when this happens just the video stops but the sound keeps playing and sometimes both stop, but in either case the video's clock that displays the position the video is at. Some files, usually .avi files are notorious in that they'll freeze when they get bad data but the sound keeps on playing and the time keeps on ticking.
