Voice over Internet Protocol (Voice over IP, VoIP) consists of a plethora of technologies, methodologies, and various transmission techniques used for delivering voice and multimedia over Internet Protocol (IP) networks which includes the Internet. VoIP is also termed as Internet telephony, voice over broadband (VoBB), broadband telephony, etc.

IP telephony covers SMS, and voice-messaging applications too that are sent using Internet rather than PSTN and involves digitization of the analog voice signal, clear encoding, and transmission with IP packets over the network. On the receiving side, the IP packets are received; packets are decoded and converted from digital to analog to reproduce the original stream.

Both IP telephony and VoIP are different as IP telephony refers to digital telephony systems that use IP protocols while VoIP services are an actual subset of IP telephony. VoIP is used as means of transporting phone calls by IP telephony.
